Entrepreneur and U.S. military veteran Shaun So is currently the head of The So Company and one of its managing partners. Additionally, he is well-known as the spouse of American actress Anna Chlumsky. The children of Asian immigrants, his parents were the first in their family to go to college. Shaun spent eight years as a special agent in the United States Army’s counterintelligence division.
Before joining “McNeil Technologies,” a defense contractor, he spent nearly three years as an intelligence analyst for the United States Department of Defense. After serving his country, Shaun So tried his hand at business. He helped launch Cubby, a company that provided urban logistics solutions but went out of business a year later. The So Company, a content-driven service design firm, was his brainchild, and he’s currently focused on expanding the business and refining its approach to serving customers better. After years of long-distance (due to Shaun’s military service), he finally tied the knot with his college sweetheart, Anna Chlumsky. They have two beautiful daughters.
Career
In 2003, Shaun began his professional career as an intelligence analyst with the United States Department of Defense Intelligence Agency. From June 2003 until April 2006, he served as an employee of the federal government. From July 2006 until March 2009, he was a defense contractor with McNeil Technologies. Meanwhile, Shaun was a special counterintelligence agent for the US Army from around October 2003 until sometime in 2011. Shaun led the unit in both home and foreign combat missions. He was also a sergeant in a squad that dealt with tactical intelligence.
From June 2011 until April 2012, Shaun served as CEO of Cubby, an urban logistics startup he co-founded. Shaun said he was inspired to open the pop-up shop and create what he calls an “urban personal logistics company” after realizing he had difficulty keeping up with his wife’s luggage when they met since she had to bring so many bags with her for work. It was possible to leave one’s bags at the pop-up shop for a few days while one went sightseeing, and Cubby would take care of them while one went about their business, all for a nominal fee. However, the business folded within a year. He was a Forbes contributor from May 2012 to December 2014. Throughout his time at the American business journal, he covered various topics, from business and veterans to entrepreneurship. Shaun has been the head honcho and managing partner of The So Company since April 2012. The content-driven service design firm serves various clients, from major U.S. government organizations to European startups. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs are two of the firm’s government clients.

Soon after, he enrolled at New York City College and eventually graduated with an MBA.
In 2000, while both were students at the University of Chicago, he met Anna Chlumsky at a party. Because of Shaun’s deployment, the couple had to deal with a long-distance relationship for a long time. Shaun was stationed in Afghanistan for two years, from 2004 to 2006. He proposed to his longtime girlfriend in May of 2006 while on leave from Afghanistan. He had come home safely in January. They decided to get engaged in the end. In October of 2007, Anna made the happy announcement. On March 8, 2008, they tied the knot in a small ceremony attended by relatives and friends in Brooklyn, New York. Penelope Joan So was born in July 2013, and Clara Elizabeth So followed in August 2016.

Chlumsky says being a mother hasn’t altered her opinion of My Girl, but she won’t be urging her children to pursue a career in the field anytime soon. On the 1991 film that launched her career, she reflected, “It was three months of my life when I was 10.” in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2015. Since watching that movie, I’ve gained some insight into childhood and being a kid. Having Penelope around hasn’t altered things at all.
